Planning is underway to implement voluntary diagnostic COVID-19 testing of students and staff who are asymptomatic – or without obvious symptoms – across Thames Valley schools.

“We’re working with partners to develop criteria and a timeline for voluntary diagnostic testing of our students and staff,” said Mark Fisher, Director of Education, adding that more details will be released as plans to implement testing at specific schools are determined.

The Ministry of Education has mandated school boards make available, targeted voluntary asymptomatic testing for two per cent of in-person students in elementary and secondary schools each week.

Testing is voluntary and consent will be required for asymptomatic students and staff only. Household members of students and staff, and anyone with symptoms, should seek testing at an assessment centre.

School locations will be selected in collaboration with local public health units.?Testing is also expected to include children and staff from child care centres located in schools.?

The Board will provide parents and guardians with more information about testing, including consent forms for their children, as further details become available.

Thames Valley is pleased the government has made voluntary in-pharmacy testing for asymptomatic school staff?available starting February 19, 2021.?A list of participating pharmacies may be found at the following website:?COVID-19 testing locations (

Local public health units will continue to be responsible for investigation, contact tracing and case management support in confirmed cases.?
